Follow Friday: The Toronto Ink Company

06 December 2019

The Toronto Ink Company, with the slogan 'We make ink from anything', was founded by Jason Logan in 2014 as a citizen science experiment to make eco-friendly, urban ink from street-harvested pigments.

I came across them from Jason Logan's book, Make Ink, A Forager's guide to natural ink making. I love the idea of foraging for urban street materials (such as cigarette butts), and 'distilling' the essence of a neighbourhood into ink. It must make you look at your environment in a different light. I am inspired to try it out.

The abstract 'ink tests' on their instagram site is full of poetic beauty and features his childlike high-strung hand lettering with pithy one liners.

I love the experimental nature and unpredictability of the ink making as well. Each ink is a one-off, possibly impossible to predictably reproduce. Which makes it like an art work. It brings to mind the Japanese concept of Ichi-go ichi-e (一期一会), the unrepeatable nature of a moment.

There are all kinds of things in a city that are just ignored unless you are looking at them with a kind of curious eye
